In 1971, Marguerite Hart, the first children’s librarian at the Troy Public Library, contacted a number of public figures asking them to write about the importance of libraries and about their experiences of reading. This was author E. B. White’s response. More reflections on the significance of libraries can be found in The Public Library: A Photographic Essay by Robert Dawson.
